In order to join our program, the following requirements must be met:

  • Bachelor’s degree in any area, or you expect to obtain your bachelor's degree at the end of the semester in which admission is sought
  • If you have ever been accepted into an Educator Certification Program, additional information will be required. Your file will be reviewed to determine acceptance into the Region 5 Teacher Certification Program.
  • Overall GPA of 2.5 or higher OR a 2.5 in the last 60 semester credit hours
  • Completed TCP application and $80.00 non-refundable application fee paid
  • An official transcript (in sealed envelope or sent electronically from IHE) showing bachelor's degree conferred
  • Three (3) references, using the TCP reference form
  • Passing score on the Nelson-Denny (reading comprehension/vocabulary assessment given in our office at interview)
  • Access to computer and the internet
  • Attendance at a two-week (Monday thru Friday) training in July
  • Agree to a Criminal History Background check
  1.  There is a potential ineligibility of certification for an individual who has been convicted of an offense (on completion of the program)
  2. The current rules: State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) rules prescribed in §249.16 of this title (relating to Eligibility of Persons with Criminal History for a Certificate under Texas Occupations Code, Chapter 53, and Texas Education Code, Chapter 21)
  3. The individual has the right to request a criminal history evaluation letter as provided in Chapter 227, Subchapter B, of this title (relating to Preliminary Evaluation of Certification Eligibility)
