"Holocaust Survivor"
Through videoconferencing schools are able
to bring a survivor of the Holocaust to visit with their students.
This program is a powerful addition to a social studies curriculum
which is investing World War II, contemporary European history,
Unites States history, and other topics such as psychology, sociology,
and ethnic studies. Students involved in literature courses
would also find this program enriching. After reading such
works as: Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl; Night;
Number the Stars; Journey to America; Daniel’s Story, and other
which describe the personal experience of those who endured the
horrors of the Holocaust, this presentation proves to be truly meaningful.
Typically, the survivors speak for about 90 minutes. They
recount their personal history for approximately 60 minutes ad spend
the remaining time addressing students’ questions. For this
program to be most effective students should have some historical
background in the events of the Holocaust and write down the questions
they might ask the survivor.
"Former Neo-Nazi Skinhead"
In a one hour presentation, Tom Leyden,
former Skinhead, describes his activities in the Neo-Nazi movement.
He discusses his motivation for joining the movement and how he
came to leave it. Mr. Leyden clearly outlines the activities
he was involved in from the hatred and physical violence he perpetrated
against people to his active recruiting of adolescents for the
Neo-Nazi movement. Time is allowed for questions and answers
following the presentation. This talk is well-suited to
senior high school students, as well as community and parent groups
who are exploring contemporary social problems. It is further
suggested that this presentation be used as part of a larger effort
to understand hatred and act as a force to effect change in the
community.
