"Bones I - They're Not Just for Breaking
Anymore"
Join "Boney" the Skeleton on a journey to understanding
the incredible framework that's under our skin. This is one of two
programs that compliments The Children's Museum's exhibit: "Bones:
An Exhibit Inside You". In this link, students will learn about the
composition of bones as well as their form and function. Designed
for grades 3 - 6.
Dates: Oct. 3; Nov. 8, 27, 2001; and Feb.
8; March 5; April 17, 2002.
Time: 9:15 a.m.
"Weather"
Students explore how weather changes, the tools
for recording weather and how it effects their lives. The class will
briefly address severe weather and what information a meteorologist uses
to predict weather. Designed for grades 3 - 5.
Dates: Oct.4; Nov. 14, 2001; and March
7; April 25, 2002.
Time: 9:15 a.m.
"Native Americans: Their Lives and Ours"
Learn about the diversity of North American Native
Americans through illustrations and artifacts. Discussion will focus
on historic groups and touch briefly upon contemporary ways of life.
Designed for grades 3 - 5.
Dates: Oct. 5, 11, 12, 15, 2001.

"Cultural Awareness"
Discuss the Chinese practice of binding feet
and the Inuit tradition of piercing and wearing a lip plug. Examine
unique artifacts and photographs to compare these cultural practices to
ones in America today. Students will discuss the appreciation of
diversity and the importance of recognizing and debunking stereotypes.
This program will introduce students to the three defining levels of culture.
Designed for grades 5 - 8.

"Simply Move It"
Join us in the ScienceWorks sewer room for a
practical application of the scientific principles surrounding simple machines.
See gears in action, an incline plane moving a heavy load and more.
Learn the what, why and how of simple machines and discuss the impact of
physical setting and motion. Designed for grades 4 - 8.

"On Stage and Behind the Scenes with Young
King Arthur"
Learn from the experts! The Lilly Theater
production staff from Young King Arthur will discuss the intricate process
of creating a play. Directing, designing and building sets, props
and costumes, hanging lights and recording sound are the essential elements
that go into producing live theater. Designed for grades 3 - 6.
Dates: Oct. 11, 2001.

"The Legend of John Henry"
Ride the Chesapeake Express back into history
and be a part of the story about a powerful struggle of man against machine,
John Henry. Our first person interpretation of this legendary African
American folklore encourages audience participation in learning call-and-response
poetry and verse from the best known song in African American Folklore:
The Ballad of John Henry. This story of a courageous and stubborn
track worker of the Chesapeake and Ohio railroads is based on the digging
of the Big Bend tunnel. Students will learn to understand the time
period, issues about the railroad as it relates to geography, and the use
of rhythm and song like John Henry did while hammering away as he sang.
This legend has grown to such mythological proportions that his true identity
no longer matters. Designed for grades 2 - 4.

"Bones II: From Bone China to Tae-Bone"
Join "Boney" the Skeleton on a cultural tour
of those magnificent bones. This is the second of two programs that
compliments The Children’s Museum’s exhibit: "Bones: An Exhibit
Inside You." In this link, students will learn about various cultural
aspects related to bones including how they are part of art, language,
music, and fitness. Designed for grades 3 - 6.
Dates: Oct. 17; Nov. 15; and Dec. 4, 2001;
and Feb. 15; March 19; April 24, 2002.

"Indian's Ponds and Wetlands"
Discover the wonder and intrigue of the wildlife
in Indiana’s ponds and wetlands. Your class will explore a variety
of Indiana niches in order to track down and study the unique characteristics,
adaptations and life cycles of native animals. Designed for grades
2 - 5.
Dates: Oct. 22; Nov. 2, 16; Dec.
5, 2001; and Feb. 22; March 8; April 19; May 3, 2002.

"Egypt: Mummies"
Discover how mummies are made. Find out
why ancient Egyptians made mummies, and see some real mummies from the
museum's collection. Also, learn about the preservation process
by making a "mummy"! Designed for grades 6 - 7.

Feb. 19; March 12; April 16; May 1, 2002.

"Lots and Lots of Fossils"
Join our science curator as she brings out cool
crystals, strange fossil animals, and even the remains of large,
prehistoric beasts that are stored within the museum's basement.
Learn about the cool rocks, minerals & fossils that can be found within
the Hoosier state. Designed for grades 4 - 6.
Dates: Oct. 29; Nov. 12, 30, 2001; and Feb. 25;
March 11; April 22, 2002.

"On Stage and Behind the Scenes with Cinderella"
Do you want to be an actor? Meet one-on-one
actors from the Lilly Theater’s production of Cinderella. These professionals
will discuss the exciting process actors go through from auditing, to rehearsing,
to performing in front of a live audience. Designed for grades 1
- 4.
Dates: Dec. 6, 2001.

"Celebrations"
The program will highlight multicultural experiences
in Winter Celebrations using lights, music, and special activities.
Hanukah, Chinese New Year, Kwanzaa, Saint Lucia, and Las Posada celebrations
are the focus. Songs and rhythmic patterns will be taught to give
an understanding of how music and dance relate to the history and culture
of these multicultural celebrations. Designed for grades K
- 3.

"Meet Famous Hoosiers James Whitcomb Riley and
Gene Stratton-Porter"
Learn about the famous children's poet, James
Whitcomb and novelist and naturalist, Gene Stratton-Porter through 1st
person character interpretation. Listen as these characters talk
about their lives, accomplishments and their contributions to Indiana's
history. Designed for grades 4 - 6.

Celebrate Black History Month from our Story
Avenue gallery! Become a part of this story-telling event
