The Wilds
is a non-profit organization situated on about 9,200 acres of
woodlands, grasslands, and wetlands. Our mission is to advance
wildlife conservation through science and education. All scientific
programs in restoration ecology, animal management, and animal
health are considered in developing content for interactive video
learning. See
www.thewilds.org.
Elementary
Simple Machines
Grades 3-5
identify simple machines in complex machines and se how they are
used at The Wilds.
Stayin’
Alive (Kit Provided)
Grades 3-5
review what animals need to survive and evaluate how those needs are
met in captivity.
Adaptations
and Habitats (Kit
Provided)
Grades 3-5 learn how adaptations and habitats
are linked and consider how changes to habitats may affect wildlife.
Prairies!
New Program!
This program is
designed as an extension to the book Sarah, Plain and Tall,
but it can be adapted to stand on its own. Students learn about the
diversity of prairie life and how different organisms depend on each
other. They watch bison, listen to birdcalls, see footage of a
prairie fire and more. Students engage in hands-on activities
throughout the session.
Middle School
Surface Mining and Reclamation
Grades 6-8 review mining technology with an
emphasis on reclamation methods from 1949 to 1972 and their impact
on land use at The Wilds.
Beaver
Engineering: Environmental Impact Study Required?
(Kit Provided)
Grades 6-7
consider the environmental impacts of beavers as they build dams and
lodges.
Middle
School, continued
One, but not
the Same (Kit Provided)
Grades 6-7
explore and apply the concept that both unity and diversity are
demonstrated in all life by examining life at various levels of
organization.
Animal
Behavior
New Program!
(Middle or High School)
Students learn
about patterns of behavior and apply “unity and diversity of life”
concepts. They predict behavior based on physical characteristics
of animals, and then engage in a miniature study to determine the
dominant and submissive members of a wild horse herd.
Wetlands
Identification
Grades 6-8
explore the definition, importance, and status of Ohio wetlands.
High School
Ohio Wetlands: Ruin, Recovery, and Reintroduction
Grades 9-12
evaluate three proposed sites to select for raising young trumpeter
swans at The Wilds. Part of a year-long problem-based curriculum,
which begins with Cleveland MetroParks Zoo. The Wilds’ component
can also be done as an isolated session.
Reclamation
and Plant Biology (Kit
Provided)
Grades 9-12
evaluate the impact of reclamation processes on seed banks and
succession. Students receive a sample of strip-mined soil along
with a chemical testing kit with which to analyze the soil.
Technology
in Scientific Studies: Endangered Wildlife Reproduction
(Kit Provided)
Grades 9-12
investigate the step-wise developments of technology and scientific
knowledge in the context of endangered wildlife management.
Giraffe Nutrition
Grades 10-12
consider a real-world challenge in the housing and feeding of
giraffes and compare their proposed solutions to actual outcomes at
The Wilds.
Animal
Behavior
New Program!
(Middle or High School)
Students learn
about patterns of behavior and apply “unity and diversity of life”
concepts. They predict behavior based on physical characteristics
