INDIANAPOLIS ZOO

One of the first zoos in the country to offer these two-way interactive video adventures, the IZ connects with students across the United States.  Students learn about the world, the environment, and the wonderful range of creatures that share it during each of these video adventures, expanding the classroom walls beyond their community boundaries.

Distance Learning Program Offerings

Unless otherwise noted, all programs are offered from 9-9:45am, 10-10:45am, 11-11:45am, and 1-1:45pm. Please note that all class times are Indianapolis time (EST). Indianapolis does not observe daylight savings time (Indianapolis never changes times), so please keep this in mind when planning programs. To register for programs online, visit www.cilc.org .

Series Classes
You may register for an individual class or sign up for the entire series. Registration deadlines are 2 weeks before the program runs, and registration is on a first come, first served basis. Visit www.cilc.org to register online.

Classification Series
This series introduces students to amphibians, fish, reptiles, birds, and mammals. You'll learn the characteristics of each group and meet some members of the different animal classes. Recommended for grades K-5.

Career Moves Series
What does it take to work at the Zoo? Why don’t you ask someone who does? Your students can have their questions answered personally by a member of the Zoo’s staff and learn what a day in the life of an IZS worker is really like. Recommended for grades 9-12.

African Safari Series
Explore the plains of Africa and discover the animals that live there in this four week series. We’ll uncover the relationships between predator and prey and look at adaptations these animals have for survival on the savannah. Recommended for grades K-8.

Animal Adaptations
All plants and animals have adaptations, or special features, that make them better suited to live in their environments. In this program, students will discuss and observe several animals and plants and determine what their adaptations are and how they aid in survival. Recommended for grades 2-8.

Amazing Amazon
Rainforest are the most biologically diverse places on Earth. Explore the plants and animal life that can be found in each of the different layers of our Amazon rainforest exhibit, including an emerald tree boa, a blue-and-gold macaw, and red-bellied piranhas!

Animal Enrichment

Animal Tales

Australian Adventure

Bear Basics
Do bears really hibernate? Where do Kodiaks come from? How do polar bears stay warm? We’ll give you the answers to these questions--and many more--as we show you some of the Zoo’s most popular residents. Recommended for grades K-5.

Birds of Prey

Butterflies: Flights of Fancy
Visit the White River Gardens (the Zoo’s sister institution) as we surround ourselves with thousands of free-flying butterflies. We’ll cover the life cycle, colorations, and survival strategies of these beautiful winged insects. Recommended for grades K-5.

Coral Reef
Where can you see moray eels, puffers, and other tropical fish in Indiana? Diving below the surface with us at our coral reef exhibit! Explore the “rainforests of the ocean” and discover firsthand their beauty and diversity of life. Recommended for grades K-8.

Deserts
Feeling hot, hot, hot? You will be during this program, where we learn all about desert life, including habitat characteristics and plant and animal adaptations. Recommended for grades K-8.

Elephants
What’s the largest land mammal, has only six teeth, and eats over 200 pounds of food a day? An African elephant! In this session, students will explore the life of an elephant by examining artifacts and meeting members of the Zoo’s elephant. Recommended for grades K-8.

Endangered Species
It’s sad, but true – entire species of plants and animals vanish from out planet everyday. In this program, we’ll discuss some causes of extinction, talk about some success stories of survival, and learn how you can do your part to help save the earth’s endangered species. Recommended for grades 3-12.
